Hostel in Thornbury

Chapter 15

“I thought you were mad.” Arnoux adjusted his grip on the reins to his mare. They were far enough from Thornbury to be able to speak free of fear that someone should overhear. Dusk had turned the remaining light grey and the shadows long.

“If I hadn’t behaved like a king, Bradwr would never have trusted me.”

“And then that nonsense about being wise.”

“You are wise. I was impressed with your answer.”

Arnoux studied Carmel, who gave him a wink. “And I impressed by yours. What was that about the wind and sand?”

“My tribesmen told me how they knew a storm would come.”

“Well...I guess it was a good gamble.”

“No gamble, brother. Bradwr is too intrigued to kill us. We must keep him fascinated.”

“I hope it isn’t a nightly thing, eating with him.”

“I too.”

Arnoux saw the hill where they had left Pyllirath, and he steered his mare toward it. The three tribesmen were quiet as they walked along beside them. Dingani stepped from the other side of a tree to greet them, and his fellow tribesmen uttered words that Arnoux didn’t know. Carmel dismounted, and so did Arnoux.

“Majesté.” Dingani bowed and continued to speak in Swaisian. Carmel asked him something. Arnoux recognized their guide’s name. After a moment, Carmel turned to him. A frown creased his forehead.

“Pyllirath has left, not to return.”

Arnoux ran his hand through his hair. “Well, he did say he was going.”

“Oui.”

Carmel turned and followed Dingani to the willow trees. The tribesmen had set a fire and put a pot near it filled with water. Then everyone set to work to make their beds while Dingani cooked their meal.

The day had been filled with new and terrifying experiences, and Arnoux found that he was tired. After they all ate, bed lured him to his blanket, and he slept without waking until the sun-kissed the trees.

After breaking fast, they gathered their belongings and drove the wagon into the town outside the fortress. Those who had come for the festival had gone, and they settled on a hostel furthest away from Thornbury. The rooms were small, and the price for each modest. Arnoux roomed with Carmel, and the four tribesmen shared a chamber beside it.

Since they had brought their wagon, horses, and chests, they paid for a stable and always left two men behind in their rooms to guard the chests when they left. Now came the task of learning as much as they could about Bradwr’s defenses without raising suspicions. Not as easy as one might expect since Carmel and his four companions stood out. Everyone noticed them. Arnoux had his own difficulties being fairer than most Drak-Zeladan’s.
